Taxonomy

The species was first described in 2009, based on phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses. It was proposed as both a novel species and the type species of the newly established genus Phocaeicola. The genus name is derived from the ancient Greek city of Phocaea (modern-day Foça), where the type strain was isolated.[2]
