The town's name is derived from Poona Creek (25.7259°S 152.9118°E / -25.7259; 152.9118 (Poona Creek)) and Poona Point (25.7103°S 152.9221°E / -25.7103; 152.9221 (Poona Point)).^[2][4][5]
