Procopio was founded by Alec Cory and Edward Schwartz in 1946, originally as Cory and Schwartz.[1] The firm's first office consisted of about 300 square feet with two cubicles at Sixth and Broadway in downtown San Diego.[2] The firm merged with its neighbor, a firm founded by Sol Price and, in 1952, AT Tony Procopio joined and the firm was renamed Procopio, Price, Cory, and Schwartz.[3] Price left in 1954 to head FedMart while Schwartz left the firm in 1959 on to accept a judicial appointment, eventually becoming chief judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.[3]
The firm expanded in 2012 by opening a Silicon Valley location in Menlo Park housing an intellectual property law group.[4] It also has an office in Orange County.[5][6] The firm opened a Washington, DC office in 2022 as its first office on the East Coast. The new office focused on patent litigation.[7] In total, the firm now has seven offices including four in California (Silicon Valley, Orange County, and two in San Diego) along with Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Washington, DC.[8]
In 2017, the firm was included in the Am Law 200 list for the first time.[9] In 2020 the firm achieved a gross revenue of $125.5 million with profits per partner of $982,000.[10] In 2023, the firm announced layoffs of 3% of attorneys and staff reflecting a decline in corporate work.[11] However, it increased its gross revenue for the year.[12]
