Raine v. OpenAI
2025 lawsuit From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Remove ads
In August 2025, the parents of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old boy who committed suicide in April 2025, sued OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman in the Superior Court of California alleging that ChatGPT contributed to their son's suicide.[1][2][3]
ChatGPT gave Adam Raine advice for how to kill himself and offered to help him write his suicide note.[4] His parents said that while Adam was looking for a friend, he found a suicide coach.
The case has sparked widespread debate about the safety of conversational AI, particularly for vulnerable users such as teenagers with mental health issues.[5] OpenAI has announced improvements to its safety measures in response to the lawsuit.[6][7]
