Robb Brumfield

Robb Thomas Brumfield (born September 5, 1967) is an American ornithologist and Roy Paul Daniels professor of ornithology and genetics at Louisiana State University[1], and currently serves as the interim dean of the LSU College of Science[2]. He studied at LSU where he received a bachelor of science in Zoology, then Illinois State University for his Master's, and finally at the University of Maryland for his PhD in Zoology. He would later perform his postdoctoral work at the University of Washington[3] before returning to LSU as a faculty member. During his 22-year-long tenure at the university, he served as the director of the LSU Museum of Natural Science from 2013 to 2019, the associate dean for Research & Administration from 2019 to 2025,[4] and was given the position of dean after the retirement of Cynthia Peterson.[2] [5] He has served as curator of genetic resources at the LSU Museum of Natural Science since his hiring.[5] He was named a Fellow of the AAAS in 2019 for "His work and commitment to advancing ornithological research at LSU," and "helping to grow what has become one of the world’s largest university-based tissue collections of birds."[4] In 2025, he received the Elliot Coues Award from the AOS for "outstanding and innovative contributions to ornithological research."[3]

Research
Brumfield's research is largely centered around the genetics, gene flow, and ecology of the birds of the American neotropics.[6] As curator of genetic resources at the LSU MNS, he has helped build their frozen tissue collection into the largest in the world.[7]
