S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) was inaugurated in 1981 by the then British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, as the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Institute for Master of Management Studies (MMS).[4] Students from the first batch of 1983 were placed in several top companies, including BPCL, HDFC Ltd., Johnson and Johnson, Wipro, Asian Paints, Nerolac Paints Ltd., and Godrej and Boyce.
In 1986, Dr. M.L. Shrikant joined the institute as the Dean and led SPJIMR for almost three decades, introducing new and innovative methods of teaching and imparting management education.[2]
In 1992, SPJIMR attained autonomous status. Following the institute's separation from the University of Mumbai, the MMS programme was rebranded as PGDM.[5]
In 1994 and 1995, new programmes – Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) and Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential (ADMAP) – were launched, respectively.[6]
In 1998, SPJIMR launched ‘Gita Shibir’, led by Dr. M.L. Shrikant. The programme has been renamed ‘Science of Spirituality’.[7]
In 2009, the PGDM programme was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).[8]
In 2010, SPJIMR’s three programmes were accredited by The Association of MBAs (AMBA). In 2023, a total of six programmes were accredited.[9]
In June 2015, Dr. M.L. Shrikant was succeeded by Dr. Ranjan Banerjee as the Dean of the institute.[10]
In 2018, SPJIMR received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).[11][12] The Delhi campus was also inaugurated in the same year with long-term and short-term programmes.[13]
In 2019, a new building was inaugurated with state-of-the-art classrooms, group work rooms, a Design Thinking Lab, a new library, and an auditorium named after Dr. M.L. Shrikant.
In September 2021, Dr. Varun Nagaraj took over as the Dean of the institute,[14] following Dr. Ranjan Banerjee who led the institute until early 2021.[15]
