S. R. Shankapal (born 8 January 1960) is an Indian academic, researcher, and higher education administrator. He is currently serving as the Vice Chancellor of GM University, Davanagere, Karnataka.[1][2]

He was the founding Vice Chancellor of M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (2013–2018).[3] He has also served as Pro-Vice Chancellor of PES University, Dayananda Sagar University, and as Pro-Vost and later Advisor at REVA University.[4] [5]

Early life and education

Shankapal was born on 8 January 1960. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Mysore (MCE-Hassan) 1982. He completed his MTech. in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Combustion and Propulsion from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1984. He earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani in 1998 for his thesis “Combustion Characteristics of Biomass-Based Slurry Fuels.

Career

Shankapal began his academic career in 1984 as a lecturer at the M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. In 1999, he established the M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies (MSRSAS) in collaboration with Coventry University, United Kingdom, where he served as its president for 14 years. He later held several academic leadership roles, including Founding Vice Chancellor of M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (2013–2018)[6] Pro-Vice Chancellor of PES University, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dayananda Sagar University, Pro-Vost and Advisor at REVA University, and Vice Chancellor of GM University, Davanagere (current). He has been awarded research grants exceeding ₹100 million from government agencies, industries, and the European Union.

His research interests include Control systems engineering, Vehicle dynamics, Image processing, Internal combustion engines and gas turbines, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element (FE) methods, Computer vision and automation, etc.[7]
