Chart performance

The Jimmie Rodgers recording charted in 1958, reaching number three on the US Billboard Hot 100^[2] and number five on the US Billboard C&W Best Sellers in Stores chart.^[3] On the R&B Best Sellers in Stores chart, it went to number seven.^[4] In Canada it reached number 8.^[5]

Cover versions

The song was revived in 1965 when the Lettermen released it as a single. Their version reached number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100^[2] and number 8 on the Easy Listening chart.^[6]
