Smashed Gladys

American glam metal band From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Smashed Gladys were an American glam metal band active primarily in the 1980s. Fronted by Canadian singer Sally Cato, the group emerged from the Toronto club scene before relocating to New York City, where they became part of the hard rock and sleaze rock circuit centered on venues such as the Cat Club.[1][2] Their sound mixed slide-guitar-driven hard rock and bar-room lyrical themes with Cato's distinctive gravelly vocals.[2][3]

The band released two studio albums in the 1980s, the self-titled debut Smashed Gladys (1985) on Heavy Metal America and Social Intercourse (1988) on Elektra Records, and toured with artists including Nazareth, Ace Frehley, Cheap Trick and Blue Öyster Cult.[1][2] They were briefly managed and produced by Gene Simmons, who recorded early demo sessions with the group, and Ozzy Osbourne contributed backing vocals to the track "Cast of Nasties".[1][3] In a later interview, Cato said that label support for Social Intercourse was limited and linked this to industry attitudes toward a woman fronting a heavy metal band.[4] Material intended for an unreleased third album was later compiled as the posthumous set Raw, issued by Golden Robot Records in 2022.[5][6]

Lead vocalist Sally Cato died on 19 May 2020. Her death was announced by guitarist Bart Lewis and reported by several rock music outlets, and later archival releases were framed as a tribute to her work with the band.[7][1][8]

History

Perspective

Smashed Gladys grew out of the Toronto punk and art rock scene in the early 1980s, when Canadian singer Sally Cato, formerly of The Concordes, began working with guitarist Bart Lewis, who had briefly played with Toronto punk group The Viletones.[1][2] The band adopted the name Smashed Gladys in 1984 and relocated to New York City, where they became part of the mid-1980s glam and sleaze metal club circuit.[1]

In New York, Cato and Lewis worked with songwriter Tommy Boyce, who helped the group refine material and rehearse in Manhattan studios.[1] During this period the line-up solidified around Cato (vocals), Lewis (guitar), drummer Matt Stelluto and bassist Ken Fox, later joined by additional guitarist Roger Lane and bassist J. D. Malo.[3][1] The band attracted the attention of KISS bassist Gene Simmons, who offered a production and management deal and recorded a set of studio demos with them.[1][2]

By the end of 1984 Smashed Gladys travelled to the United Kingdom to record their debut album, Smashed Gladys, produced by Mark Dearnley for the Heavy Metal America imprint of Heavy Metal Records.[1] After its 1985 release, the group toured clubs and theatres in North America, opening for acts such as The Dead Boys, Nazareth, Ace Frehley, Cheap Trick, Poison, Rick Derringer, Blue Öyster Cult and Krokus.[1] Their high-profile New York shows included a Wednesday night residency at the Cat Club, which became a regular showcase night for hard rock and glam bands in the city.[1][3]

The group attracted major-label interest in the wake of their club success. In 1986 they signed to Elektra Records after A&R executive Michael Alago and label vice president Howard Thompson took them on.[1] Elektra acquired the rights to the debut album and sent the band back into the studio to work on a second record, titled Social Intercourse. Recording took place in New York with producer Ric Browde, with additional tracking and mixing in Los Angeles by Michael Wagener.[1] Released in 1988, Social Intercourse featured the songs "17 Goin' On Crazy", "Lick It Into Shape" and "Legs Up" and continued the band’s mix of hard rock, glam and tongue-in-cheek lyric themes.[2] During the sessions the band met Ozzy Osbourne at a neighbouring studio; Osbourne contributed backing vocals to the track "Cast of Nasties".[1][3] Some song titles and subject matter led to concerns about retail censorship, and contemporary reports describe the band facing resistance from certain chains and promoters in parts of the United States.[1][7]

Smashed Gladys began work on material for a third studio album at the end of the 1980s. According to later label and press accounts, the group received production interest from John Paul Jones and Mick Ronson, ultimately beginning pre-production with Ronson before his health problems halted the project.[1] The band were then associated with manager Teddy Slatus, known for his work with Johnny Winter, but internal and personal difficulties followed, including the death of bassist Mark Sliker from a drug overdose.[1] The group’s momentum was further affected by changes in the rock market in the early 1990s, and Smashed Gladys eventually disbanded. Cato subsequently withdrew from the music industry and returned to work as a graphic artist and writer.[1][7]

On 19 May 2020 Sally Cato died at the age of 64, a fact later confirmed by guitarist Bart Lewis and reported by music press outlets such as Sleaze Roxx.[7] Rock Club 40 and other retrospective features also noted her death when announcing archival releases by the band.[1][9]

Archival releases

In 2021 Australian label Golden Robot Records began issuing songs from the unreleased third-album sessions, mixed from the original demos by producer Mark Dearnley and engineer John Catto.[1][8] A run of digital singles, including "Bump in the Night", "Go to Hell", "Never Take No" and "Bleed for Me", introduced the material to a new audience.[9][1]

The full album, titled Raw, was released digitally in October 2022 on Golden Robot Records and later issued as a limited double-vinyl edition in 2023.[5][3][6] Raw combines tracks intended for the abandoned third album with selections from the earlier Simmons-produced sessions and has been described by reviewers as a posthumous tribute to Cato’s work.[5][6]

Musical style and reception

Summarize
Perspective

Writers have generally described Smashed Gladys as a glam metal or sleaze rock band whose sound combined slide-guitar-driven hard rock with Cato’s gravelly vocal style.[3][8] Screamer Magazine characterised the classic line-up as a five-piece built around dual guitars and a rhythm section that drew on both punk and boogie influences, with lyrics that leaned toward bar-room storytelling and sexual humour.[3] Contemporary reviews and later retrospectives have linked the band to the New York club scene that produced groups such as Circus of Power, The Throbs and Cycle Sluts from Hell.[2][5]

In a 2010 interview, Cato said that Social Intercourse sold around 70,000 copies within a few months of release, but that Elektra’s president declined proposed tour supports with Iron Maiden and Poison and kept promotion for the album limited.[4] She attributed this lack of support in part to industry attitudes toward a woman fronting a heavy metal band, describing the label environment as an “old boy” network. [4]

Upon release, the band’s second album Social Intercourse received attention in rock magazines and later retrospectives, where it was noted for its exaggerated lyrical themes and provocative cover art.[2] In a 2015 feature for Classic Rock, journalist Sleazegrinder described the record as one of the more extreme examples of late 1980s "flash metal", arguing that its approach divided opinion even among fans of the style.[2] Later reviewers have tended to treat the band as a cult act whose releases document a particular moment in the New York glam metal underground rather than mainstream chart success.[3][6]

Raw received positive notices from niche rock press when it appeared in 2022. Rockposer described the collection as effectively a "lost" third studio album, praising the sound quality of the newly mixed recordings and highlighting the range from sleazier up-tempo tracks to songs with stronger southern rock and AC/DC-style influences.[6][5] Retrospective coverage in Screamer Magazine and RAMzine has similarly presented Raw as a way for fans to reassess the band’s catalogue after Cato’s death.[3][5]
