Sorkheh (Persian: سرخه)[a], whose name is often interpreted as “The Red One,” is a city located in the Central District[b] of Sorkheh County, within Semnan province, Iran. It functions as the administrative capital of the Sorkheh County,[5] a status it assumed following the territorial reorganisation after the 2011 National Census, when Sorkheh District was elevated to county level and renamed as its Central District. [c] Previously the capital of Sorkheh District within Semnan County, the city ceded its district-level administrative role in 2016, when Lasjerd village became the capital of both the Central District and the Lasgerd Rural District..[5]

Language

Sorkhei, a Semnani dialect and language, is still spoken by some of its inhabitants.[citation needed]

Population

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 9,062 in 2,686 households,[6] when it was capital of Sorkheh District in Semnan County.[7] The following census in 2011 counted 9,711 people in 3,045 households.[8] The 2016 census measured the population of the city asf 9,951 people in 3,388 households,[2] by which time the district had been separated from the county in the establishment of Sorkheh County and renamed the Central District. Sorkheh became the county's capital.[5]
