The university was founded on May 27, 1779, when a decree of the Governing Senate under the reign of Catherine the Great established a land survey school.[1] It was founded by Sergey Ivanovich Rozhnov. The first director of the school was writer Sergey Aksakov. In 1819, the school was renamed the Konstantinovsky Surveying College, and in 1835 it was again renamed as the Konstantinovsky (Constantine) Surveying Institute. In 1849, the received the rite of a first-rate university and was transferred to the position of a military institution. It became the Moscow Surveying Institute in 1917.
During the period from 1835 to 1917, the Institute trained more than 2,000 specialists, including approximately 1,500 surveying engineers. In 1945, the Institute was renamed the Moscow Institute of Land Use Engineers (MIIS). In connection with the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Moscow Institute of Land Use Engineers, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for the school's merits in training highly qualified personnel for agriculture and a significant contribution to the development of science and practice of land management. Under the Provision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 30 on January 18, 1991, the State University of Land Use Planning was established "to train experts in land law, surveying, soil science, geobotany, geodesy, architecture and planning of agriculture inhabited localities."[1] Order No. 193 of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation on March 24, 1992 established the University with the training of specialists in land law, land management, soil science, geobotany, geodesy, architecture and planning of villages.[2]
