History

Sukatani was formed in 2022 by Alectroguy (Muhammad Syifa Al Lutfi) and Twister Angel (Novi Citra Indriyati).[2] They initially performed anonymously by wearing balaclava masks. Besides wearing masks, one of Sukatani's common stage acts is distributing vegetables to the audience. This act is a social statement that reflects their concern for environmental, health, and sustainability issues. Through this, they aim to educate fans and the public on the importance of consuming local and eco-friendly food. They only revealed their identities after the police forced them to withdraw the song "Bayar Bayar Bayar" and issue a public apology video on social media.[1]

Album

On 24 July 2023, Sukatani released an album Gelap Gempita. The album consists of eight tracks, one of which is "Bayar Bayar Bayar," which criticizes corrupt police officers who abuse their authority.[3]

Withdrawal of the song "Bayar Bayar Bayar"

On 20 February 2025, Sukatani announced through a social media post that they had withdrawn the song "Bayar Bayar Bayar" from all music platforms. In the post, they appeared without masks, introduced themselves, and expressed an apology to the Chief of the Indonesian National Police.[4]

Various media reports stated that Sukatani could not be contacted after releasing their apology video. Another consequence of the video was that Sukatani's vocalist, who also worked as an elementary school teacher, was fired from their job.[1][3]

The withdrawal of the song "Bayar Bayar Bayar" has sparked discussions about alleged intimidation by the police against Sukatani.[5] Contrary to the intended effect of the withdrawal, the song became even more frequently played and popular, even serving as the theme for the 2025 Indonesian protests. This case has also fueled debates on restrictions on freedom of expression in Indonesia.[6][7][8]

Musical style

Sukatani embraces the post-punk. Their music is inspired by 1980s anarcho-punk bands. Their musical style blends post-punk elements with strong new wave sensibilities, featuring dark gothic rock tones combined with new romantic melodies and lively synth-pop influences. This unique fusion resembles other bands such as Le Tigre, The Slits, Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, and Franz Ferdinand, known for their dance-punk style.[9][2] Their fashion performances which wearing balaclava resemble of Russian protest group Pussy Riot.[10]

Sukatani's songs generally raise social issues, particularly those related to the economy and government policies.[2]
