He entered Sri Lanka Law College in 1988 and passed out in 1992. On his academic excellence, he was selected to do apprenticeship under Hon. Attorney General of Sri Lanka. He took oaths on 11 June 1992. Since he is keen on studying, he obtained Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) degree from the Open University of Sri Lanka in 1998 while practicing as an Attorney-at-Law. In year 2001, considering his work performances, Judicial Service Commission of Sri Lanka nominated him for a World Bank Scholarship where he obtained Master of Laws (LL.M) in the field of Commercial Law from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK in 2002. Further pursuing studies, Premachandra obtained Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the field of Legal Anthropology from the University of Sabaragamuwa of Sri Lanka in 2014. During the period of July 2010 to August 2013, the He served as a Resident Magistrate and Family Court Magistrate in the Republic of Fiji. Since Fiji follows common law jurisdiction, he had immense benefit to familiar with British legal system and thereby He has gained national and international experiences in adjudicating trials in respect of Civil Criminal, Family etc. He has served heavy stations in Sri Lankan Court of Laws, as a Magistrate, District judge and a High Court Judge, such as Civil Appellate High Court Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Kandy. On the other hand, he has presided in Criminal High Court while he was serving in Ampara, Nuwara Eliya and Matale and well equipped with Criminal Law norms and Criminal Procedure. In Anuradhapura, he also presided as the High Court Judge of Special Child Abuse High Court. Hence, the work experience he has gained so far is immense. Premachandra is work-oriented, has excellent judicial temperament, was a panel member of the Foster Care Parents Committee, appointed by Ministry of Justice on nomination of Judicial Service Commission. The Applicant was nominated several overseas trainings by the Judicial Service Commission of Sri Lanka and he serves as a Judicial Trainer for the judges in the Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute. Sumudu Premachandra has authored several Books and Articles in the fields of Law and Anthropology. The knowledge, integrity, independence and expertise of the Applicant in legal field has always striven to uphold the rule of law of the country and to do his best for his nation. He is married to Kusha Indumathi Walagedara, Sri Lankan Lawyer who is practicing in Central Province Kandy. they have two children Muditha Pasan Premachandra and Dehami Pabasara Premachandra.
Sumudu Premachandra is a career judge, a person who is dedicated to the legal profession. His legal profession is now spanning over 33 years ( As at July 2025) . At the age of 24, he was called upon to the unofficial Bar where he practiced over 6 years in the Central Province of Kandy. On 01st of July 1998, he was appointed as a Magistrate (Judicial Officer) and now he has a 27 years experience as a career judge. He is now serving as the Judge of Court of Appeal, Sri Lanka.
Sumudu Premachandra is a Sri Lankan lawyer who serves as a judge of the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka. He was appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and has served since 11 March 2025.[1][2][3][4]

Early life
Premachandra is an alumnus of Royal College, Colombo.[5] He graduated from Sri Lanka Law College, the Open University of Sri Lanka, the University of Aberdeen and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.[6]
Career
Premachandra previously served as a judge in Sri Lanka's High Court before being appointed to the Court of Appeal.[7][1][2][3]
