History

The synagogue was founded in 1806.[1] During World War II, the Ustaše perpetrated the Holocaust in the puppet state of the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945). The Jewish community in Zagreb suffered greatly. By 1941, when racial laws were enacted, about 12,000 Jewish people lived in Zagreb; after the Holocaust, barely 3,000 Jewish people lived in the city, half of whom emigrated to Israel in the 1950s.[1] Jewish property, both municipal and private, was confiscated by the Ustaše, and what little remained was confiscated during the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia (1945-1990).[1] Formerly Jewish buildings now have different owners and purposes.[1]

In the modern day, Zagreb's Jewish community is not large, with about a thousand members, but it is active. The synagogue is the center of Jewish life in the city and a gathering place for Jews in Croatia.[1]
