This GRC came into formation in 1991, when it absorbed the Tiong Bahru GRC, Telok Blangah and Tanjong Pagar Single Member Constituencies (SMC).
In 1997, the GRC absorbed parts of Brickworks GRC.[1]
Since the formation of the GRC, the ward was notable for its repeated walkovers with the last walkover in 2011. In addition in 2011, Tanjong Pagar GRC became the only constituency to be uncontested following the disqualification of a team of independent candidates (led by Ng Teck Siong) as they submitted their nomination papers late.[2]
In 2015, the GRC was contested for the first time in which the SingFirst team led by Ang Yong Guan and Tan Jee Say contesting the GRC. The PAP team led by anchor minister Chan Chun Sing proceded to win with 77.7% of the vote against the SingFirst's 22.2%.[3]
In 2020, the PSP team contested in the GRC and the PAP team helmed by Chan Chun Sing and Indranee Rajah won with 63.1% of the vote against the PSP's 36.9%
In 2025, the GRC absorbed Dover and Telok Blangah from West Coast GRC. To maintain as a five-member GRC, the electorate was reduced by carving out Queenstown ward to form a new Queenstown SMC.[4][5] Indranee Rajah left the GRC to helm Pasir Ris-Changi and Chan Chun Sing became the sole anchor minister. In the election of the same year, the PAP won with 81% of the vote against the PAR's 19%, being the best-performing GRC.[6]
