Teoh Teik Huat

Teoh Teik Huat (1946/1947 – 15 July 2024) was a Malaysian politician who served as MP and state assemblyman in the 1980s and 1990s as well as Penang Democratic Action Party chairman.^[1] He later joined Parti Keadilan Rakyat with several other DAP members, and was a supreme council member.^[2]

Career

Teoh represented Bagan in the Dewan Rakyat from 1986 to 1990, and was state assemblyman for Pengkalan Kota from 1982 to 1990 and Paya Terubong from 1990 to 1995.^[3]

He was leader of the state chapter at the time that DAP made a serious bid to take over the Penang state government at the next general election in 1990.^[4]

For that campaign, dubbed Tanjung 2, the party formed an alliance with the Umno splinter party Semangat 46 as part of the Gagasan Rakyat coalition.^[5]

However, even though party chief Lim Kit Siang defeated incumbent Chief Minister Lim Chong Eu in Padang Kota, DAP narrowly failed to win, bagging 14 out of the state's 33 seats.^[6]

In later years Teoh left the party for PKR.

Retirement and death

Teoh died from complications from surgery in Perth, Australia, on 15 July 2024, at the age of 77. He had been living there with his children for a number of years.^[1]
