Prior to 17th century
- 1158 - Duke Henry the Lion builds bridge, mint, and salt-depot.[1][2]
- 1175 - Munich gains official status as city.
- 1239 - Coat of arms of Munich in use.
- 1240 - Otto II Wittelsbach in power.
- 1255 - City becomes ducal residence of Upper Bavaria.

- Cathedral construction begins.[3]
