"Tingin" (lit.'Look') is a single by Filipino band Cup of Joe from their extended play (EP) Patutunguhan (transl.Destination) (2023). Written by Raphaell Ridao, Gian Bernardino, Vixen Gareza, Redentor Ridao (brother of Raphaell) and Janine Teñoso who also featured the song. According to Teñoso, the song expresses the feeling of being captivated by someone's presence, where every moment shared is cherished and marked by the light they bring into each other's lives. It was released on April 28, 2023, through Viva Records.

The song achieved strong streaming performance and debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Philippines Songs chart on October 27, 2023, marking both its first week on the chart and its peak position. After signing with Viva Records in mid-2019, Cup of Joe began production on their debut extended play (EP) Patutunguhan (transl.Destination), which was featured on Billboard Philippines' list of top albums and EPs of 2023.[3] The EP includes a mix of new and previously released songs, such as "Patutunguhan" (2023) and "Wag Na Lang" (2023), along with earlier singles like "Tataya" (2023), "Estranghero" (2022), and "Mananatili" (2022).[4] The band described "light" as the central theme of the extended play,[5] Patutunguhan Live Manila, held at Viva Cafe in Quezon City in September 2023.[6]

Followed by the release "Tataya", the single "Tingin" was released on April 28, 2023, collaboration with Janine Teñoso and later included as the opening track of Cup of Joe's debut EP Patutunguhan, which came out on June 30.[1] Followed by her collaboration with Arthur Nery on "Pelikula" (lit.'Movie') was released in 2021, Teñoso became a "chartbreaker" with "Tingin", along with the band.[7]

Composition and lyrics

"Tingin" is an alternative pop[8] song featuring atmospheric and dreamy pop instrumentals[9] with a length of three minutes and forty-two seconds long. It was written by Raphaell Ridao, Gian Bernardino, Vixen Gareza, Redentor Ridao and Janine Teñoso.[10] In Billboard Philippines, stated that the lyrics depict the perspective of someone who, despite the chaos of the world around them, remains completely focused on the person they love, unaffected by any distractions.[11] The song was produced by Shadiel Chan.[10]

According to the band, the single has resonated with a wide audience, particularly among Generation Z listeners while also appealing to millennials, contributing to its mainstream success.[12] Reflecting on the experience, the band stated, "It's still surreal. While we're thrilled that so many people connect with our music, creating it is our artistic expression, not just about chasing hits. We pour our hearts and stories into the lyrics."[13]

Music video

The official music video for "Tingin" was released by Cup of Joe's YouTube channel on October 23, 2023. It was directed by Jay-Ar Villarojas, who also directed the music video for "Straydogs" by Felip, member of the Filipino boy band SB19. The video depicts three perspectives, focusing on Teñoso and Cup of Joe vocalists Gian Bernardino and Raphaell Ridao. Each is shown experiencing personal struggles before ultimately coming together for a rooftop jam session, followed by a stage performance.[14]

Live performances

Cup of Joe and Janine Teñoso's performance of "Tingin" on the Wish 107.5 Bus was uploaded on July 17 to YouTube.[15] In March 2025, the band performed "Tingin" during their Silakbo concert tour in Cebu.[16] The band served as the opening act for Lola Amour's concert at the Circuit Makati Event Grounds in April 2024, where they performed "Tingin".[17] On October 15, Cup of Joe performed at Billboard Philippines: Mainstage, the first anniversary show, held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, where they played their chart-breaking single "Tingin" with the entire arena singing along.[18]

Commercial performance

Following its release on April 28, 2023, "Tingin" debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Philippines Songs chart dated October 27, 2023, also marking its peak position. The song contributed to a record-setting week with 17 Filipino acts charting simultaneously on the Philippines Songs chart.[1] By August 10, 2024, the single entered the top 10 of the Billboard Philippines Top Philippine Songs chart, climbing to number 10.[19]

Cup of Joe's overall chart history, the single later climbed to number 4 on the Philippines Hot 100, reached number 5 on the Top Philippine Songs chart, and peaked at number 7 on the Philippines chart under the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).[20] At the inauguration of the Official Philippines Chart on February 19, 2025, the single was recognized as the ninth Local Song of the Year.[21]
