In April 2024, it was announced that Steven Spielberg's next directing project would be a UFO film based on his own original idea, with David Koepp, who worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park (1993) , The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), War of the Worlds (2005) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) writing the screenplay.[4] In May, Universal Pictures was set to distribute.[5] In June, Emily Blunt was in talks to join the film in the lead role.[6] In August, Colin Firth was in early talks to join the film, while Blunt was confirmed to star.[7] The next month, Eve Hewson was in talks to join the film.[8] The next month, Colman Domingo joined the cast, with Firth and Hewson also confirmed to join.[9] In December, Wyatt Russell was in talks to join the film, and Josh O'Connor was confirmed as having been cast.[10] O'Connor was offered his role without having to audition.[11] On March 7, 2025, it was announced that Paul Tazewell will serve as costume designer, in his second collaboration with Spielberg following West Side Story (2021).[12][non-primary source needed]

Filming

Principal photography began on February 26, 2025, in New Jersey, Atlanta, New York City and Huntington under the title Non-View, and wrapped in late May.[1] A casting call for Long Island–based background actors to play "wrestling fans" for a scene to be shot on March 4, 2025, was issued on January 16, 2025.[13][14][15] Subsequent casting calls in March of 2025 sought background talent in the Hudson Valley area of New York and the Middlesex County area of New Jersey; the Middlesex County casting call exclusively requested participants who could drive their own vehicles in the film, while the Hudson Valley casting call also requested actors to play diner patrons and hotel guests.[16][17] Additional casting calls sought actors to play North Korean soldiers.[18]

Filming was also conducted in March 2025 on the Cape May Seashore Lines railroad in southern New Jersey.[19] In early April, filming took place in the McGinley Square neighborhood of Jersey City.[18] Screenwriter David Koepp stated that production on the film had wrapped in late May and that Spielberg had written the initial story treatment before collaborating with Koepp.[20][better source needed]
