The Wikimedia Incubator is a testbed for trying out and evaluating new language versions of Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, and Wiktionary. Only after convincing performance in the Incubator will the Wikimedia Foundation Board consider the creation of a new language version.
New Wikisource language versions are tested in the Old Wikisource, and new Wikiversity language versions in the Beta Wikiversity.
Wikimedia Incubator is a wiki project of the Wikimedia Foundation used to test the feasibility of new Wikimedia projects or existing projects in new languages. It was officially launched in June 2006. Before that, most test wikis were conducted on Meta-Wiki.
Wikimedia Incubator is a wiki project of the Wikimedia Foundation used to test new language editions of Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wiktionary, and Wikivoyage.[1] New language editions of Wikiversity are hosted on Beta Wikiversity,[2] and editions of Wikisource are hosted on Old Wikisource.[3][1]
Completely new projects cannot be started on Wikimedia Incubator.[1] For those, see Meta-Wiki at meta:New project process.
The creation of a new test wiki does not guarantee it will be approved by Wikimedia; approval from the Language Committee is required first. For more details, see meta:Requests for new languages.
There are Wikipedia editions in 493 languages in the Incubator.
On 11 February 2016, the Adyghe Wikipedia was successfully created.[4]
On 22 July 2015, the South Azerbaijani Wikipedia was successfully created.[5]

Overview
As of October 2, 2010, Wikimedia Incubator was hosting test versions of 303 language editions of Wikipedia, 75 of Wiktionary, 49 of Wikibooks, 44 of Wikinews, and 28 of Wikiquote, totaling 499 test projects. When a test project is deemed likely to succeed, it is given its own wiki and URL and becomes "independent." The term "incubator" refers to a device for hatching eggs.
Wikisource is served by the Multilingual Wikisource, and Wikiversity by Beta Wikiversity, both functioning similarly to Incubator.
