Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ēˀstei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁édti (to eat). Cognate with Latvian ēst, Proto-Slavic *ě̀sti (whence Bulgarian ям (jam), Old Church Slavonic ꙗсти (jasti), Russian е́сть (jéstʹ)), English eat, Latin edō, Sanskrit अत्ति (atti), German essen, Old Norse eta (whence Swedish äta, Danish æde, Norwegian Bokmål ete, Norwegian Nynorsk eta).
