Inherited from Old Ruthenian мо́ва (móva), from Old East Slavic мъ́лва (mŭ́lva). from Proto-Slavic *mъ̀lva. Doublet of малва́ (malvá). Cognate with Russian and Ukrainian мо́ва (móva).
