Persian
Etymology
From Middle Persian [script needed] (srdʾl /sālār/), a pre-Middle Persian compound of 𐭫𐭥𐭩𐭱𐭤 (LOYŠE /sar/, “head”) + [script needed] (-dʾr /-dār/, “-holder, -keeper”), with the regular phonetic shift *sar(a)-dàr(a)- > *sardàr > *sarlàr > sālār. Compare دل (del), گل (gol) for the phonetic change. Note Old Armenian սաղար (sałar), an Iranian borrowing. Doublet of سردار (sardâr).
