Etymology

From the Analects, Book 4 (《論語·里仁》):

子曰:「見賢思齊自省。」 [Traditional Chinese poetry, trad.]
子曰:「见贤思齐自省。」 [Traditional Chinese poetry, simp.]
From: The Analects of Confucius, c. 475 – 221 BCE, translated based on James Legge's version
Zǐyuē: “Jiàn xián sī qí yān, jiàn bù xián ér nèi zìxǐng yě.” [Pinyin]
The Master said, "When we see men of worth, we should think of equaling them; when we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves."
