Finnish

Etymology

-inen + -uus; probably by analogy with the numerous -uus nouns derived from adjectives ending in -inen.

Suffix

-isuus (front vowel harmony variant -isyys, linguistic notation -isUUs)

  1. Forms nouns from past active participles, adjectives ending in -ias/-iäs and occasionally other adjectives.
kuollut (dead) + -isuuskuolleisuus (death rate)
    estynyt (prevented) + -isuusestyneisyys (prevented-ness)
uupunut (exhausted, tired) + -isuusuupuneisuus (exhaustedness, tiredness)
    antelias (generous) + -isuusanteliaisuus (generousness)

Usage notes

  • Many more nouns ending in -isuus/-isyys are simply derived with -uus/-yys from adjectives ending in -inen, which are plenty. -isuus/-isyys is only used directly with past active participles (-nut), adjectives ending in -ias/-iäs, some adjectives ending in -las/-läs, and rarely other adjectives.
