Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ـسز (-siz), from Proto-Turkic *-siŕ (-less).

-siz

  1. Suffix used to create adjectives not containing the noun; roughly equivalent to English -less (or sometimes de-, non-, un-)
    Antonym: -li
    Yalnızca kafeinsiz içecekler içerim.
    I only drink decaffeinated beverages.
  2. without (with nouns, pronouns, never verbs)
    Synonym: -den (with verbs)
    siz bensiz gitmiyorsunuzdur inşallah..
    y'all are surely not going without me right?

Usage notes

  • Stress is carried onto the suffix when appended to a word with stress on the last syllable:
    alkol /alˈkol/ becomes alkolsüz /al.kolˈsyz/
  • Stress doesn't shift when appended to a word that is stressed elsewhere.
