From Middle Dutch -stein, from Middle High German stein (“stone”). Never used in this form outside of compounds in Dutch, this toponymic suffix started being adopted from Middle High German toponymy in the 13th century and has remained somewhat productive as a toponymic suffix in Dutch to the present day.
