Proper noun

Beere

  1. A surname.

German

Etymology

From Middle High German ber, bere n (sometimes f), from Old High German beri n, from Proto-Germanic *bazją n. Cognate with English berry and eventually Dutch bes.

Chiefly in Upper German, the final vowel was lost through early apocope after short vowel + single sonorant. The -e was maintained in the north, however, where it led to a shift to the feminine gender (compare Middle Low German bēre f), facilitated by the predominant use in the plural.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈbeːʁə/
  • Audio (Germany (Berlin)):(file)
  • Rhymes: -eːʁə

Noun

Beere f (genitive Beere, plural Beeren, diminutive Beerchen n)

  1. berry

Usage notes

  • Compounds use the stem Beeren- with the simplex (e.g. Beerensammler), but otherwise they use the stem Beer- (e.g. Erdbeerkuchen).
