Etymology
First attested as Ceuclum around 365. Potentially derived from Proto-Indo-European *geug- (“bend, curve”), here referring to a bend in the Meuse. A competing hypothesis proposes an interpretation of the toponym as a Celtic or Latin name suffixed with Gallo-Roman Latin -acum. Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Geverik, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
