Etymology
First attested as gheverich in 1271. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Gallo-Roman Latin *Gabriacum, *Gaviriacum or *gabriacum (“goat park”). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *gabra (“wetland, swamp”) suffixed with *-ikja- has also been proposed. Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Gever, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
