Etymology
From Middle High German [Term?], from Old High German distilfinco (also distilfogal). By surface analysis, Distel (“thistle”) + Fink (“finch”). Cognate with Dutch distelvink, English thistlefinch, and compare Latin carduelis, from carduus (“thistle”). Goldfinch favor thistle seeds as food, and use thistle down as nest material.
