Etymology

From Middle High German [Term?], from Old High German distilfinco (also distilfogal). By surface analysis, Distel (thistle) + Fink (finch). Cognate with Dutch distelvink, English thistlefinch, and compare Latin carduelis, from carduus (thistle). Goldfinch favor thistle seeds as food, and use thistle down as nest material.
