From Proto-Brythonic *Guɨðel (whence Old Irish Goídel), from Proto-Celtic *weidus (“wild”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁weydʰh₁- (“woods”). Cognate with Breton Gouezel and Welsh Gwyddel.
