Etymology
Named by Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman between 1595 and 1597. From Latin grūs (“a crane (bird)”), originally from Proto-Indo-European *gerh₂- (“to cry hoarsely”).
