Etymology
First attested as heleuuyrð in 840-849. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian uurd (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element may be Proto-Germanic *halu (“sloping”) or Old Frisian *hailaga (“holy, sacred”). Compare Helhuizen, Hell, Holwerd and Hulhuizen.
