Etymology
First attested as holeuurt in the first half of the 11th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Holwert, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian hole (“pit”) or hol (“low-lying, swampy”) and uurt (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Helhuizen, Hell, Helwerd and Hulhuizen.
