Etymology

First attested as holeuurt in the first half of the 11th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Holwert, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian hole (pit) or hol (low-lying, swampy) and uurt (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). Compare Helhuizen, Hell, Helwerd and Hulhuizen.
