First attested as homen in 1188. Etymology uncertain, although the origins of the name are likely Germanic. Perhaps derived from Middle Dutch homme (“mould”) (compare huim (“foetid air”)) and Old Norse húm (“twilight, dusk”). More at hom (“milt”).
