Hungarian
Etymology
Generally considered as a derivative of the Hungarian verb lesz (“to be”) hence its original meaning (see below); another theory is it might be derived from Slavic *lovъ (“hunter”). Its origin is unrelated to the Hungarian noun Hungarian levente (“warrior”).
Pronunciation
Proper noun
Levente
- a male given name, meaning “existing”
Usage notes
The only officially listed diminutive of Levente is Levi; unrelated to the Jewish first name Levi (also written as Levy), but pronounced similarly. Its slang nicknames include Lecsó and Leves.
