Etymology

From Middle High German mait, meit, contracted form of Old High German maget, thus a doublet of Magd (maid). Cognates with Dutch meid, maagd, Low German Meid, Maagd, Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌲𐌰𐌸𐍃 (magaþs) and English maid.
