Literally, “Human-peace” (perhaps as opposed to divine peace); from Old High German man (“man”; “human”) + fridu (“peace”). Best known for a 13th century king of Sicily, made famous by literature, as in Byron's poem Manfred (1816–1817). Revived in the 19th century.
