Octopodiformes

Etymology

From Latin octōpodis, genitive singular of octōpūs (from Ancient Greek ὀκτώπους (oktṓpous)) + -iformes.

Like most taxonomic names above the rank of genus, this was formed by adding the appropriate ending for the rank to a stem derived by removing the ending from the genitive of the generic name treated as a Latin noun (Though, in this case, the generic name came directly from the Latin name for the animal, so it was already Latin).

Proper noun

Octopodiformes

  1. A taxonomic superorder within the class Cephalopoda vampire squid and octopods.
