From Middle High German ānmaht, an alteration (due to ān, āne ("without"; > German ohne)) of āmaht, from Old High German *āmaht, suggested by āmahtīg (“powerless”), from ā- (“without”) + maht. Compare Old High German unmaht. More at unmight.
