Borrowed from Norwegian Onstad, named after several farmsteads in Norway, many of which were prefixed with Old Norse names followed by staðr (“farmstead”); for example, Augunarstaðir (“Auðun's farm”), from auðr (“wealth”) + un (“friend”) (see vinr) + staðr.
