From Middle High German phingesten, from Late Latin pentēcostē, from Ancient Greek πεντηκοστή (pentēkostḗ). The Old High German form fimfchusti is a partial calque of the Ancient Greek term, with πεντη- (pentē-) replaced by fimf (“five”). Cognate with Hunsrik Pingste and Dutch Pinksteren.
