A West Central German form, which displaced the more southeastern variants above. From Middle High German pippis, phiphiz, from Old High German pipz, phiphiz, phiffiz, early borrowing from Vulgar Latin pip(p)ita, alteration of Latin pituita. Cognate with Dutch pip, English pip, French pépie.
