Etymology

From Middle High German Sephteme, probably from Latin septima (seventh) in a supposed ad septimam leugam (at the seventh league), the place being roughly seven Roman leagues (a bit over 15 km) away from Bonn. The sound shift ptft through Primärberührung, the further shift ftcht through the northwestern, especially Dutch, development, which is amply attested in the Rhineland (cf. Luxembourgish Griecht, Luucht, uechter).
