From Middle High German sumach, from Old French sumac, probably through Old Spanish (modern Spanish zumaque) or alternatively Old Italian (modern Italian sommacco), from Arabic سُمّاق (summāq), from Classical Syriac ܣܘܡܩܐ (summāqā, “red; sumac”).
