German

Etymology

From Middle High German thrōn, trōn, from Old French tron, from Latin thronus, from Ancient Greek θρόνος (thrónos, seat, place of honour).

    Pronunciation

    Noun

Thron m (strong, genitive Thrones or Throns, plural Throne)

    1. throne
    2. (figuratively) the monarchy

    Usage notes

This and other words of Greek origin were unaffected by the spelling reform that changed the "th" in e.g. Thier to "t" (Tier).
