Via various forms (Waldemer, Wolmaria, Wolmahr, Vladimirec, Wolmar), ultimately from the male name Waldemar (Germanic) or Vladimir (Slavic). Some consider this to be the name of the 13th-century Danish king Valdemar the Great; others, that of the 13th-century Prince of Pskov, Vladimir Mstislavič.
