From Middle High German verstant, verstont, ferstant, from Old High German firstant (intellect, wisdom), from Proto-West Germanic *frastand, from Proto-West Germanic *frastandan (to understand), equivalent to ver- + Stand. Cognate with Middle Low German vörstant (whence German Low German Verstand), Dutch verstand. Related to verstehen.
