Etymology

In the sense “omen” from Middle High German vorzeichen, from Old High German forazeihhan, from Proto-Germanic *furaitaikną. Cognate with Old English foretācen (English foretoken). In the technical senses simply from vor- (before, in front) + Zeichen (sign).
